My grandmother's Pho recipe was one of the very few things my family brought when they emigrated from Vietnam as refugees. As we settled in the Pacific Northwest we started selling traditional Vietnamese cuisine at county fairs to make ends meet. Our food became so popular that we eventually opened a successful chain of authentic Vietnamese restaurants. Even with the success of our award-wining Pho recipe, we have never forgotten the times in the refugee camps when my mom had to ration our 2 packs of ramen and broth in order to feed the family.
